Thornbury Castle, a Tudor Castle Palace boasting the oldest Tudor gardens in
England, is a luxury hotel which provides a perfect base to explore the
Cotswolds, escape for a week-end or celebrate a special occasion. Edward
Stafford, the third Duke of Buckingham received a royal licence to build this
'fortified manor' or castle-palace in 1510. King Henry VIII and his second
wife, Anne Boleyn, stayed here, and Princess Mary, later Queen Mary I, also
lived here for several years. Today, much still remains of the original 16th
century building.
There are plenty of architectural details to enjoy from
intricate oriel windows to arrow loops. This beautiful castle stands in 15
acres of regal splendour surrounded by its vineyards and ancient yew-hedged
gardens, and is renowned for being one of the finest country house hotels in
the world.
There are three dining rooms at
Thornbury Castle all featuring original fireplaces, fine pictures, elegant
tableware and leaded windows, enabling guests to enjoy an intimate dinner for
two as well as a private party for as many as fifty. All dishes on our lunch
and fixed price dinner menu use only the finest and freshest ingredients,
sourced from local markets and suppliers wherever possible. We grow our own
herbs on the premises and a quantity of vegetables such as courgette flowers
and cherry tomatoes.
Food at Thornbury Castle offers plenty of modern
internationally inspired dishes as well as some traditional favourites such as
our famous Treacle Tart and Butterscotch Pudding and roasts on Sundays. Our
cheeseboard is exclusively British too. There has even been a vineyard within
the castle walls for over 500 years, from which Thornbury Castle wine is still
produced.
There are 25 bedchambers and all are fabulously
atmospheric, most with four-poster or coronet beds, stone walls, tapestries,
roaring fires, ornate carved ceilings and views to historic parkland and the
River Severn beyond. The Tudor Bedchamber even has arrow-slit windows. Each
bedchamber is an experience.
All rooms are luxuriously warm and most have real fires.
They're also extremely comfortable with opulent, well-appointed bathrooms,
colour TVs (carefully screened, of course) and welcoming touches such as the
decanter of sherry you'll find on your arrival.
On site facilities include croquet and archery but we are
pleased to offer clay pigeon shooting and falconry on site with prior notice
(at an extra charge). Fishing, quad biking and other activities can be arranged
off-site, again with prior notice (at an extra charge).
To the south of Thornbury Castle lies the Georgian city of Bath with its Roman
Baths, renowned architecture and excellent shopping. Further south, but still
within easy motoring distance, are historic attractions such as Stonehenge,
Glastonbury Tor and the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. To the west lie the lovely
wooded Wye Valley, and the famous Welsh border castles such as Berkeley, Raglan
and Chepstow. And finally, to the east, lie the Cotswolds, beautiful touring
countryside with quaint villages, traditional market towns and, of course,
Cheltenham, where many a fortune has been lost and made at the town's
racecourse, home to the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup. The popular Chepstow
Racecourse is also only a short drive away.
